Thierry Van Ryswyck was born in 1911 in Antwerp. He trained at the Antwerp Academy in the studio of Josué Dupon, who was a close associate of Rembrandt Bugatti. Van Rijswijck recognised the importance of observing animals at the zoo and became a renowned animal sculptor, leading him to settle in Paris in the 1930s and participate in the Art Deco movement.
